2020 FABLAB SUMMER CAMPS
Camps are all up and ready for registration! We would like to thank you all for your support on our camps! We have added a second week of Python and Raspberry Pi camps for advanced students and for those who have taken our first camps last year. If you have any questions please email Gaby at gaby@fablab.com or would like to reserve any laptops for any of the camps. We have limited laptops for reservation for those students who do not own a laptop.
Python Programming Microbits Camp (Beginner)
Learn to create your own computer programs using the powerful Python programming language. This camp covers the basics of writing code and thinking like a programmer, and you will do several interesting projects. If you’ve wondered about what goes on inside your computer or wanted to dive into “real” programming, this is for you! You will be working with the latest version of Python 3 and writing your code in the IDLE programming environment. Note: This camp will be the same as last year’s camp. If your camper has already taken this camp, we advice he/she to take our advanced camp in August!

Raspberry Pi Bake-Off (Beginner)
Coding, building circuits, prototyping ideas, and learning electronics are all included in our Raspberry Pi Bake-Off Camp. This camp is designed for beginners; campers will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of coding through creating interactive projects. Python will be languages campers will utilize to write commands for the GPIO (hardware control platform). Campers will leave with Raspberry Pi 3, Power source, Micro SD card, Bread board, LED’s, and an interactive electronic project built on the Pi. This year, our new project will be a heartbeat simulation using an interactive pulse sensor!

Coding for Drones
Students will learn design of drones and how to code for drone performance. Drone laws and ethics, FFA authorization, uses of drones for community, mapping, and photography art will be taught. Using understanding of laws and ethics, students will complete multiple droning challenges such as designing and making a class drone and transporting goods. Students will work in teams to design and construct drone obstacles for drone races.

Zero-Sum Game Design in Unity
Unity is a professional software for building interactive environments for game, virtual reality, and much more. This camp is designed for campers with no experience in coding or design, to launch into the world of game design. Campers will design 3D environments in Sketch-up, and then bring them into Unity to build objectives and rules for the their games. We will 3D print the a small Sketch-up model for campers at the end of the week. On the last day, we invite friend and family in to play the prototype games.

All Things Animated
This camp explores the world of animation through various means of creation. Campers will collaborate to write a series of short stories and create several animations. This camp includes stop-motion animation, claymation, 3D modeling, 3D printing, and 3D animation. Campers will learn how to draw storyboards, create stop motion videos, 3D model characters, and 3D Print their characters. Students will edit all of their short clips into a multimedia short film. At the end of the camp they will take home their videos and a 3D printed character they have designed!

Inventor Engineering Camp
Camp’s focus will be on learning the elements of design thinking while also being introduced to 2D and 3D design skills. Design thinking is an integral process in the world of inventing and will help expand camper’s views on problem solving. While things like prototyping and testing will be gone over, topics such as empathy centered design and effective brainstorming will also be covered. Campers will learn problem solving skills while also learning basic 3D skills through 3D printing and basic 2D design skills through laser cutting. By the end of the week campers will have designed and built multiple projects to take home!

The Producer: Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality production is emerging in Western Washington, and FabLab is excited to offer a camp that allows campers to explore the world of VR production. In this camp students will learn how to photograph an film in 360. They will also learn 3D modeling in Sketchup, and how to move their models into VR. FabLab has an HTC Vive on sight were campers will create unique drawing using hand controllers that can be saved in 3D format to view later. On the final day campers will build their own VR Cardboard viewer, and we will have screening of projects for friends and family.

Python Programming Camp (Advanced)
Prerequisites: Be familiar with Python OR have taken the Beginners Python Camp
This camp is for more in depth learning to create your own computer programs using the powerful Python programming language. During the camp, students will learn how to write more advanced code and begin to think like an advanced programmer. Are you ready to know more about what goes on inside of your computer? In this camp students will have the opportunity to create 3 projects! Our projects consist of coding games, creating graphics as a plus to your game, and making a more advanced chat server! You will be working with the latest version of Python 3 and writing your code in the IDLE programming environment.

Raspberry Pi Bake-Off (Advanced)
Prerequisites: Be familiar with Raspberry Pi AND Python OR have taken the beginners pi camp.
Our new advanced camp will have more coding, building circuits, prototyping ideas, and learning electronics! Campers will have the opportunity to learn more in depth coding through creating interactive projects. Python will be languages campers will utilize to write commands for the GPIO (hardware control platform). Campers will leave with Raspberry Pi 3, Power source, Micro SD card, Bread board, LED’s, and an interactive electronic project built on the Pi.
For this camp we will have multiple projects campers will have the opportunity to create and/or choose from! The projects will consist of do a more advanced music/light project with a display instead of lights, add a speaker to the GPIO project, and a new theremin project!
